Efficacy of Adsorb-it in Removing Residual Oil Sheen
Adequate equipment is available for the removal of gross oil contamination from surface waters. Subsequent to the removal of gross oil contamination by this equipment, inevitably, residual rainbow sheen remains.

Adsorb-it effectively removes gross oil contamination,
lighter-end oils, and residual rainbow sheen.

Surface Waters

Use the Shore Guard aka “Dumbo Surfer”, the Boom and Dock Curtain, the Filter Boom, or the Sheen Sweep.

For oil releases on open waters or near shorelines, use interconnected sections of the Dumbo Surfer with watercraft on each end. Form a “U’ or “J” and slowly tow the interconnected sections through the impacted area. The oils, oil-borne contaminants and oil sheen will be retained in the Dumbo Surfer. To reuse the Dumbo Surfer simply remove the flotation core and press, wring, or centrifuge to remove and recover the retained oils. Replace the flotation core and the Dumbo Surfer is ready to reuse.

For oil releases adjacent to floating docks or in an area where Fence Boom has been deployed, attach the Boom and Dock Curtain to the floating docks or to the top of the Fence Boom. The Boom and Dock Curtain is designed with ballast chain to ensure that the curtain hangs just below the floats on the Fence Boom. Oils, oil-borne contaminants and oil sheen will be retained in the Boom and Dock Curtain. To reuse the Boom and Dock Curtain, simply remove the ballast chain and press, wring, or centrifuge to remove and recover the retained oils. Replace the ballast chain and the Boom and Dock Curtain is ready to reuse.

For oil releases in streams, rivers or other flowing waters interconnected sections of the Filter Boom can be deployed across the flowing water to recover oils, oil-borne contaminants and oil sheen. The Filter Boom is designed with a flotation head and ballast chain to keep the lower portion of the filter curtain below the water surface. Oils, oil-borne contaminants and oil sheen will be retained in the Filter Boom. To reuse the Filter Boom, simply remove the flotation head and ballast chain and press, wring, or centrifuge to remove and recover the retained oils. Replace the flotation head and ballast chain and the Filter Boom is ready to reuse.

For small oil releases adjacent to watercraft or in contained areas such as excavations, use the Sheen Sweep to recover floating oils, oil-borne contaminants and oil sheen. The Sheen Sweep with flotation is designed to attach to a standard dust mop handle to allow controlled movement of the Sheen Sweep in confined areas or areas with limited access. To reuse the Sheen Sweep simply remove the flotation frame and press, wring, or centrifuge the Sheen Sweep cover to remove and recover the retained oils. Replace the flotation frame and the Sheen Sweep is ready to reuse.

Oil/Water Separators

Oil/water separators efficiently remove MOST of the oil as oily water passes through the system. Again, on most oil/water separators, a residual rainbow sheen remains at the point of final discharge. Simply provide Adsorb-it as a final filtration media and the final discharge oil sheen is eliminated. See a simple Polishing Filter Pack Unit design with screen plates covered with Adsorb-it, and a drop-in Oil Water Separator Filter Curtain design.

The US Navy uses the Adsorb-it fabric on the shoreline beneath their oil/water separator outfall to absorb the oil and oil sheen, and they are designing a new oil/water separator with the Adsorb-it
Filtration Fabric specified as the filtration media.

Conclusions

These methods demonstrate that Adsorb-it is the product of choice for removing the residual oil sheen from water.
